The greatest and finest sanctuary of ancient Athens, dedicated primarily to its patron, the goddess Athena, dominates the centre of the modern city from the rocky crag known as the Acropolis.
The Acropolis Museum was founded to exhibit all the significant finds from the Sacred Rock and its foothills.
The Museum hosts its collections across three levels, as well as in the archaeological excavation that lies at its foundations.
The Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens, also known as the Olympieion, was built over several centuries starting in 174 BCE and only finally completed by Roman emperor Hadrian in 131 CE. Its unusually tall columns and ambitious layout made the temple one of the largest ever built in the ancient world.
The Panathenaic Stadium is a classical cultural monument of Greece. Its history is directly connected to the Modern Olympic Games, from their revival in 1896 until the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. It is also the place from which the Olympic Flame is delivered to all the Olympic Games, Winter, Summer and Youth, as well as the Athens Authentic Marathon.
The Presidential Mansion in Athens, Greece, is the official residence of the President of the Hellenic Republic. It served previously as the Royal Palace, until the abolition of the monarchy by the 1973 referendum.
Mount Lycabettus, also known as Lycabettos, Lykabettos or Lykavittos, is a Cretaceous limestone hill in the Greek capital Athens. At 277 meters above sea level, its summit is the highest point in Central Athens and pine trees cover its base.
Athens neoclassical trilogy as it commonly called, at Panepistimou street, is identified with the heart of the intellectual life of the city. On the left, the National Library, at the centre the University of Athens, on the right the Academy of Athens. These are three impressive neoclassical mansions that were constructed in the 19th century.
Situated in the center of Athens, Syntagma Square is not only located in the heart of Greece’s capital, it is also an important historical public area.
In front of the Parliament building is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, watched over day and night by the “Evzones”, two Presidential Guards dressed in a curious traditional uniform. Tourists can see the changing of the guard every hour on the dot, but the most splendid ceremony takes place on Sundays at 10am.
Monastiraki is a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, Greece, and is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. The area is home to clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and specialty stores, and is a major tourist attraction in Athens and Attica for bargain shopping. The area is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Church of the Pantanassa that is located within the square. The main streets of this area are Pandrossou Street and Adrianou Street.
